Hardwood Flooring

What is the difference between solid and engineered hardwood flooring?

An engineered wood plank has a surface layer of hardwood. Therefore, a manufactured wood floor looks the same as a solid hardwood floor. While both types of planks have the same classic appearance, there are differences between the two. Depending upon your application, one type may be preferable over the other. The flooring specialists at Haus Of Floor Decor can help you with all of your hardwood flooring needs. We are a locally-owned store serving the Big Bear Lake, California, area since 1997.

Moisture tolerance

Solid wood does not tolerate moisture well, so it can't be installed in basements or bathrooms. If you want to place solid hardwood flooring in the kitchen, consider traditional on-site installation. The flush-look floor will be well-sealed if this installation method is used. Engineered wood, on the other hand, can be installed in moisture-prone spaces because of its composition. Most importantly, the planks' base is made of layers of plywood that are laid in different directions.

Installation method

Solid hardwood flooring is nailed to a wood subfloor. Engineered hardwood can be installed in more areas of the home because of its floating floor design. Planks interlock, and therefore, the floor does not need to be joined to the subfloor. Underlayment, with a moisture barrier if required, is placed between the subfloor and flooring. This underlayment enhances the performance of the floor. Engineered wood can be installed on cement and most existing hard surface floors.
